The OS11021FDF is built with solid spruce on the top and back. Solid spruce is the standard when it comes to making most stringed instruments. The natural wood grain of the spruce is accentuated with the distressed satin finish. The satin finish will allow the wood to produce a louder sound as the finish is not a thick as a glossy finish. Combined with the solid spruce this autoharp will produce some great acoustic sounds. Just like the rest of the Oscar Schmidt autoharps, the frame of autoharp is made from rock maple and features a 10 ply rock maple pin block. The pin block is tied into the maple frame using a tongue and groove joint. This pin block is very strong and gives your tuning pegs a long life. Rock maple is used in the construction of the autoharp due to the wood’s strength. The soundhole on the OS11021FDF is framed by maple and provides a great amount of air space to produce acoustic sounds.
One of the great features of the exclusive line of Oscar Schmidt autoharps is the addition of a fine tuning system. The fine tuning system is a compliment to the main tuning pegs and allows you to make small adjustments to get your strings in the proper pitch. One of the advantages of the fine tuning system is that you will be able to help extend the life of your main tuning pegs over the years. The fine tuning pegs will allow you to make the constant tuning changes as your strings slowly stretch out. You should always do most of the tuning using the main tuning pegs as the fine tuning peg will eventually bottom out as they have a finite amount of adjustment.
Oscar Schmidt has been making a few running updates to their line of 21 chord autoharps. One of these updates has been the addition of thicker felt on the bottom of the chord bars to prevent the buttons from becoming flush with the chord bar cover. Also, Oscar Schmidt has placed felt padding on the underside of the chord bar cover to dampen any sound that the chord bars may make when they come into contact with the chord bar cover.

The secondary tuning system consists of tuning pegs that can be adjusted with an Allen wrench at the bottom of the autoharp. This allows professionals to adjust the tension of the strings by a significant amount providing a more refined sound.

Incredible Strength
The pin blocks in many of the finest autoharps consist of hard rock maple for extra strength. The pin blocks are laminated 10 ply rock maple pin blocks meaning they are specially coated for extra strength. The purpose of the pin block is to firmly hold the tuning pins in place where the strings are attached. The added strength of the laminated rock maple ensures that everything will stay in the right place.
The Autoharp, like the piano, is a tempered scale, so the same string is used in several chords, even when perfectly in tune in one chord may sound slightly sharp or flat in another.
Over time as strings loosen, use fine tuning to tighten so it can reach its limits.
The first twang of a string is higher and the tone settles in after a second. Turn the tuner to 442 and attach the clip to the middle peg.

Invented in 1881 and patented in 1882, the Autoharp has had a remarkable hundred-year history. After being proclaimed “the nation’s favorite musical instrument” and then nearly fading into obscurity, the Autoharp has taken its manufactures on an endless roller coaster of ups and downs. As a nineteenth-century parlor room favorite, it was finally replaced in popularity by the phonograph. The Autoharp did not die. It retreated to the mountains where it underwent a metamorphosis from a parlor instrument to a folk instrument. From there it came out into our schools to become a classroom feature and finally has emerged as a popular instrument for the serious musician.
